Facial toners and how to use them?

In recent years, you might have noticed that facial toners have gain popularity among many people and they have become an important part of a proper skincare regime. But, you might be thinking that what are these toners? Toners are essentially water-based liquids that go deep into the skin making it hydrated and helping in wipe off all the impurities, residual makeup, and oil away so that it can balance the normal PH of your skin.

Types of toners

There are mainly two types of toners; water-based and alcohol or ethanol-based toners. According to skincare researchers, water-based toners are the best for use as they are skin-friendly and do not create any stinging or drying effect that is the characteristic of alcohol-based toners. So how can you differentiate between water-based or alcohol-based toners? Just go for the ingredients!

Ingredients of a toner

The first 5 ingredients of a product are those primary ingredients that are present in a high percentage and mainly make up most of the product. So if a toner has any alcohol or ethanol component mentioned in the first 5 ingredients then you must not go for it. Use this same ingredient tactic to select a toner according to your skin type or for the purpose you may need. For example, if you have dry skin go for a toner that has rose water as its primary ingredient as it is best for hydration of the skin. The same way, Chamomile soothes the irritation of skin so it is best for sensitive skin types while the toners having Aloe Vera as their primary ingredient helps in the treatment of inflammation of the skin.

Reason to use facial toner

When it comes to the purpose of facial toners we can equate it with a makeup primer that prepares the skin to absorb skincare products appropriately. So you see that the way a makeup primer gives proper coverage for the foundation and makeup products to set in, the facial toners ease the deep absorption of skincare products into the skin.

When should you apply a facial toner?

This question might come to your mind that when should you use facial toner in your skincare routine? Facial toners come as an intermediate step between cleansing your face and applying the moisturizer. Now what happens is that when you cleanse and wash your face with a facial wash, it removes the dirt, dead skin cells and oil from your face so it is left in a natural and exposed condition. Here, the facial toner does its job by hydrating the skin so it can better absorb the moisturizer deep into the pores of your skin. Secondly, when the moisturizer goes deep into your skin it would make the appearance of pores on your skin less visible since they are filled with a good amount of skincare products.

As far as the use of a facial toner is concerned, there is no hard and fast rule but you must make sure that your skin is clean from all makeup and impurities. You can use a soft cotton pad and pour some toner on it. And then gently apply it all over your face and neck or you can simply pour some drops of the toner in the palm of your hands and tap that gently on your face.

Choosing a toner according to your skin type

The most important thing to keep in mind while buying a facial toner is your skin type. It isn’t necessary that if a facial toner suits someone it will also be good for your skin. So first things first, check for your skin type that whether you have oily, dry, or sensitive skin and also take into account whether if you have an acne problem, open pores, wrinkles, dark spots, etc.

So, if you have open pores, try to find a toner that has alpha hydroxyl acids like glycolic acid, citric acid, or any of its category because what happens is that dirt particles and dead cells stick to these open pores and make their appearance look larger. So these types of toners will remove them. Some of the toners best suited for open pores include;
