The hate you give (THUG): Summary & Review

The hate you give: Summary

the hate you give
The hate you give

The hate you give is the first book by Angie Thomas which proved to be a wonderful start for her writing career. The book came in 2017 and it talks about the discrimination and injustice black people have to face living in America or more generally in all-white countries. Angie Thomas has portrayed the story from the perspective of a 16-year-old Starr Carter, who had to withstand the harsh reality of her best friend being murdered in front of her by a white police officer. The story revolves around Starr and two different worlds of her. One time Starr Carter is just another black girl in the indignant environment of Garden Heights; the place that is home to her. While the other times, she is the dope black girl in her suburban white school, Williamson. Starr isn’t the same girl in two of her different worlds. She has to act the way each of the sides demands from her and sometimes it makes her think that she is faking it. The hate you give is not only about Starr Carter but also, Khalil, Kenya, Seven, Chris, Devante, and so many others. It is about those who fight for justice and speak out against the wrong.

The hate you give: Book review

One night Starr goes to a party with her friend, Kenya and that becomes the worst night of her life. There Starr gets to meet her long-lost best friend, Khalil, and start reminiscing some old memories when suddenly they hear gunshots at the party and they had to run for their lives. During the drive back from the party, Starr notices many strange things about her best friend but before she can actually know the truth behind them, a cop stops them in an abandoned street. What happens next becomes the worst incident of Starr’s life, to see her best friend being murdered infront of her while there is no one to help them. The cop doesn't go easy on Starr and Khalil and who would stand with a black, even if a white person is at fault? Especially when the person at fault is a cop. After the incident, Starr had to deal with many other events in her life from depressing over the death of his best friend to getting to know the truth about his life to hear people speak bad about him to Starr speaking up for him.

I really liked the story build-up and how Starr stood up for his best friend. The ending? Well, it kinda broke and put back my heart. What I can say is that Angie Thomas has sent out a powerful message through “The hate you give” that whatever we fill in the minds and lives of our youth it will come back to us. If all the youth get to see is hate and brutality then how can you expect anything good to come from them when they are grown up? That's what you give them.

So yeah! Highly recommend.
